According to a recent report by Midlands based newspaper Sunday Mercury, Midland hospitals are winning the war against the MRSA ‘Superbug’ which some NHS Trusts completely eradicating the disease.
During the period of 2004 and 2005 more than 1000 patients in the region contracted MRSA in the NHS hospitals but in the past 12 months cases have dropped to just over 100. But most impressive is that official figures released from the Health Protection Agency confirmed that 2 hospitals – Royal Wolverhampton and Sherwood Forest and recorded zero cases of the superbug. In turn it is expected that this will see a reduction in a number of people who sue the NHS for clinical negligence compensation.
According to the newspaper report, a spokeswoman for Wolverhampton Hospitals (which recorded 209 MRSA infections between 2004 and 2007) said “the stunning turnaround” had been “down to hard work from staff”.
